Miri International Jazz Festival


Sarawak will once again hold its annual Miri International Jazz Festival in Miri, Northern Sarawak on 8th and 9th May 2009 (www.mirijazzfestival.com). This year will see a lineup of several world famous bands like Alamode from Australia, Bombay Baja Brass Band from UK, Dites 34 from France, Jeff Maluleke from South Africa, Rumba Calzada from Canada, Steps in Time featuring John Kaizan Neptune from Japan, Thomson Big Band from Singapore and lastly Malaysia’s very own Double Take. The event will be held at the Pavillion, Parkcity Everly Hotel, Miri, a 4 star hotel.

4 previews have been scheduled with 2 previews being held on 5 and 6th May 2009 at The Laundry, The Curve, One Utama, Kuala Lumpur.

Dites 34 will be performing their unique blend of traditional French folk music with contemporary jazz of pure energy on 5th May 2009 while Alamode will be entertaining the crowd on the 6th May 2009 at same location. The latter 6 pieces band will entertain you with their blend of funky and jazzy tempo.

Jeff Maluleke and Raja Brass will be performing on 7th May 2009 at Piasau Boat Club, Miri. The band’s tune combines Indian melodies with elements of Jazz. They will surprise the audience with 1 Malaysian song by injecting a Bollywood tempo to it.

The crowd’s voted favourite for 2008, Rumba Calzada will be performing again this year.
It is interesting to know that more than 20 booths selling food, beverages, souvenir and handicraft items being set up around the vicinity of Parkcity Everly Hotel. Other services like spa and information booth are also being set up. This will add more excitement and festivity to the 2 days event. Those confirmed food and beverages vendors are Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Parkcity Everly Hotel, Miri Marriot Resort and Spa, Mr Ho Fine Food, New Nikko Japanese Food, Siamese Secrets, Seashorse Bistro, Dessert, Astaka, Zaika Restaurant and Fratini Restaurant. The food menu to tantalise your bud will range from local, continental,Western, Italian, Japanese to Indian cuisines. There will even be a wide array of ice-creams to cool you down in this tropical hot weather.
Apart from food, there will also be stalls selling the festival souvenir items like the limited edition MIJF t-shirt, handicraft, silver jewelry, batik painting and other crafts. Festival goers can also enjoy spa service at Tan Tjek Spa.
The organizer has even set up several wide screens around the festival ground to ensure that everyone gets to enjoy the jazz concert as they indulge into the fine food sold there. Please go here for the time schedule of the artist’s performances.
